Thursday, November 18th, 2021, Noon to 1:00 p.m.

Charity Fraud – The Case of Kermit Washington is a fraud presentation that takes a close look at the federal investigation and prosecution of Kermit Washington (Washington), a former NBA player. The case against Washington began as part of a massive counterfeit software conspiracy and quickly expanded to include an illegal referral scheme involving a California attorney, falsification of records during a federal investigation, and tax fraud. Each of these schemes were made possible by Washington’s fraudulent use of a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We will review the various fraud charges, discuss investigative techniques used, and examine the financial analyses completed.
The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Missouri. It was investigated by Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
